Coming Soon: Route 638 (South River Road) Bridge Replacement

The proposed project will replace the existing bridge on South River Road in Caroline County over the South River with a new bridge. The new bridge will be longer than the existing bridge, with road shoulders. 

The existing bridge is 81 feet long and 28 feet wide. The proposed replacement bridge would be build on the existing bridge's alignment, but would be 110 feet long and 28 feet wide. The travel lanes on the replacement bridge will 9 feet wide, with 5-foot shoulders. 

During construction, South River Road would be closed to through traffic at the bridge over South River. A posted detour would be in place for an estimated year (12 months).

If your concerns cannot be satisfied, VDOT is willing to hold a public hearing. You may request that a public hearing be held by sending a written request to Ms. Jessica Graves, Project Manager, VDOT, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405 on or prior to September 7, 2022. If a request for a public hearing is received, notice of date, time and place of the hearing will be posted.
