Recently Completed: Route 240 (Crozet Avenue), Albemarle County

Cost and schedule ►

VDOT proposes to rehabilitate a portion of the existing substandard Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) bridge over Lickinghole Creek in Albemarle County. This project is not a total replacement like the recently completed Route 250 (Ivy Road) bridge project.

The existing concrete span bridge was built in 1921 and carries approximately 7,100 vehicles daily, according to 2017 data.

On April 17, 2019, VDOT presented two construction alternatives at a design public hearing with respective schedules and traffic impacts for public input:

  • Alternative A: The first alternative proposes to close Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) at Lickinghole Creek in both directions for six months with a detour in place. Traffic south of the bridge will use Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) to Route 240 (Three Notched Road) to reach Crozet Avenue. Traffic north of the bridge will reverse the detour and use Three Notched Road to Rockfish Gap Turnpike.
  • Alternative B: The second alternative involves a phased approach to construction. The bridge would be reduced to one lane and two-way traffic would be controlled by a temporary traffic signal for at least eight months. Drivers would experience delays near the bridge site especially during rush hour with this alternative.

Based on feedback received at the public hearing, Alternative B (phased constriction) was selected. This project is ahead of the schedule presented at the public hearing. The project was advertised for bids on June 8, 2021. Bids will be opened on July 28, 2021. The public will be notified about traffic impacts and changes through media reports, social media posts and 511, as well as coordination with Albemarle County and other stakeholder groups.

Benefits

This project will rehabilitate an existing substandard bridge on a state-maintained roadway that serves residential areas, local businesses and industries.

If not rehabilitated, the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and will eventually have to be closed to vehicles.
