STAUNTON – (11:30 a.m.) Approaching mid-day Saturday, snow and slush are reported on many roads in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. The region is reporting 1-3 inches of snow, with higher totals in mountainous areas. While snowfall is expected to taper off this afternoon, strong winds and refreezing will become a threat to travelers.

Winds of 30-40 miles an hour are expected, which could re-cover previously plowed roadways with drifting snow. Fallen branches, trees and debris are also potential hazards. Temperatures Saturday night are expected to drop into the teens, so wet roads will refreeze. The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid non-essential travel.

VDOT crews and contractors are on duty throughout the 11-county Staunton District to plow or treat roadways as needed.

Here are the road conditions as of 11:30 a.m. Saturday:

Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Alleghany County. Clear conditions in Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Clarke County. Moderate to minor conditions in Frederick County. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah and Warren counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Rockbridge and Highland counties.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
