STAUNTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation has begun safety-enhancement work on Route 55 (Strasburg Road) in Warren County. The roughly 7-mile project runs between the Shenandoah County line and the Front Royal western town limits. Improvements include shoulder widening, guardrail improvements, and new rumble strips along the edges of the roadway.

From May through July 2022, motorists should be alert for flagger traffic control Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Contractors started guardrail improvements on Thursday, May 5. Shoulder widening is scheduled to begin Monday, June 6. All work is weather permitting.

In December 2021 VDOT awarded a $1,772,816 contract to W-L Construction & Paving, Inc. of Chilhowie, Va. The Route 55 project has a fixed completion date of July 31, 2022. The Federal Highway Administration funds 90 percent of the design and construction of this project through the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
