ICY SECONDARY ROADS AWAIT DRIVERS TUESDAY MORNING

STAUNTON – (4 a.m.) A hard freeze has left icy conditions Tuesday morning on many roads in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. The region received several inches of snow on Monday followed by a brief period of melting. Overnight temperatures in the teens have created areas of frozen slush and black ice.

Interstates and nearly all primary roads are clear, but slick spots remain on secondary routes and subdivision streets. The Virginia Department of Transportation also advises motorists to use extra caution on bridges and other elevated surfaces, where ice is more likely to be present.

VDOT crews continue to plow and treat roadways in the 11-county Staunton District. Here are the road conditions as of 4:00 a.m. Tuesday:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Minor conditions in Highland County. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge and Augusta counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Highland, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Bath County.
