EXPECT BLACK ICE ON CLEAR BUT DAMP ROADWAYS IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY TONIGHT
STAUNTON – (4:45 p.m.) Rain and sleet from the Thursday, December 15 winter storm have tapered off in the Shenandoah Valley. Light precipitation remains in some areas.
Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors have been out since midnight treating roads as needed with abrasives and salt for slush and ice. As of 4 p.m. on Thursday, all interstate roads are clear. Most primary roads and secondary roads are clear to minor throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Some moderate conditions are on secondary roads in Warren and Shenandoah counties.
Many roads remain damp which can lead to refreezing and black ice as surface temperatures drop below freezing tonight. Travelers are asked to drive defensively and use caution around bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first. All travelers should buckle-up.
VDOT crews will monitory roads throughout the night for icy spots and refreeze. Tree crews will also be available for downed limbs, branches and other debris resulting from the icy weather.
