VDOT News - Staunton

STAUNTON – (10 p.m.) Nighttime has brought slick conditions to roads in the northern portion of the Shenandoah Valley as the March 3 weather system exits the area.  Rain persisted in the southern Valley counties with snow in the central and northern counties during the day.  After sunset conditions worsened as snow continued in the northern area.

Drivers should expect slush and icy conditions on untreated roadways. Bridges, overpasses, ramps and any area with air underneath will freeze first.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews are plowing and treating roads and will be out throughout the night.

Motorists are asked to use extreme caution and drive defensively.  Always use seatbelts.

Here are the road conditions as of 10 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County

Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties.  Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Clarke County. Minor conditions in Highland and Warren counties. Minor conditions on Route 33 in Rockingham County and on Route 211 in Page County. Moderate and minor conditions in Shenandoah County.  Clear conditions in Bath, Alleghany Rockbridge, Augusta and other primary roads in Page and Rockingham counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren and Clarke counties. Minor conditions in Highland, Rockingham and Page counties. Clear conditions in Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
