VDOT News - Staunton

STAUNTON –  (5:00 p.m.) Winter weather continues in the Shenandoah Valley with snow and sleet gradually turning into rain. All roadways are wet and vary from clear to moderate winter conditions. Virginia Department of Transportation crews will continue to treat and monitor roads throughout the night. Some roads may experience flooding due to soil saturation and extended periods of precipitation. VDOT crews will barricade roads as needed for flooding conditions.

Motorists should use extreme caution when driving throughout the region and expect slick areas. All vehicle occupants should use seat belts.

Here are the road conditions as of 5:00 p.m. in the Virginia Department of Transportation Staunton District:

Interstate 64 – Minor conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties. Clear conditions in Augusta County.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Rockbridge, Shenandoah, and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Alleghany, and Clarke counties.  Moderate to minor conditions in Frederick County.  Minor conditions in Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren and Page counties. 

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland, Bath, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Page counties..

For winter weather road conditions go to http://www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions.  In this box individual counties can be chosen to view.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
