SALEM DISTRICT: WATCH FOR SLICK SPOTS ON INTERSTATES AND MOST MAIN ROADS
Secondary roads in the New River Valley, Hillsville area and higher elevations covered in snow
SALEM (4:45 a.m.) – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews and contractors have been plowing and treating roads in western Virginia since last night. As rain transitioned to snow, snowfall was heavy at times, particularly to the west of Roanoke in the New River Valley and the counties around Hillsville.
This morning, drivers will find the interstates (I-81 and I-77) and most primary roads (1-599) are mostly clear with isolated slick spots. Drivers should use caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses where there may be slick spots.
Many secondary roads in the New River Valley (Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd, and Giles counties), the Hillsville area (Carroll and Patrick counties) and Craig County are snow covered. Conditions will improve throughout the day as temperatures rise and snowplow drivers continue to make progress on these routes.
Secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) in counties south and east of Roanoke have isolated slick spots, particularly in the higher elevations.
