SALEM DISTRICT: OVERNIGHT WINTRY MIX COVERS MANY ROADS IN SLUSH, FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW
Watch for slick spots on interstates and primary roads and slush and snow on secondary routes
SALEM – A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain has created slick road conditions overnight in western Virginia. Equipment operators and crews have been plowing and treating primary roads and interstates overnight.
Drivers will find the interstates and most primary roads (those numbered 1-599) in minor condition, which means they are mostly clear with isolated slick spots. Drivers should use caution on these routes, particularly on ramps and cooler spots where there may be patches of ice or slush.
Conditions on secondary roads (those numbered 600 and above) and neighborhood streets vary greatly throughout the region. Many of these roads are covered in slush from a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow.
Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions and traffic incidents on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app and the 511 website at www.511Virginia.org .
The 12-county VDOT Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Franklin, Floyd, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.
