SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation has awarded a $4.5 million contract for a road project to improve the 0.6-mile section of Route 419 (Electric Road) between Route 867 (Ogden Road) and Route 220 at Tanglewood in Roanoke County. The contract was awarded to Kanawha Stone Company, Inc. of Nitro, West Virginia.

The road improvements will alleviate congestion and provide safer accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists along Route 419 in front of Tanglewood Mall.

The project includes the addition of a third lane along southbound Route 419 between Ogden Road and the Route 220 Expressway on ramp.

The traffic signals at Route 419’s intersections with Ogden Road, Elm View Road and South Peak Boulevard will be upgraded to include pedestrian signals and crosswalks. Sidewalks will be added along northbound Route 419 and along southbound between Ogden Road and the Wendy’s restaurant.

The project also includes designating bike lanes in both directions of Route 419 and combining the bus stops along the southbound side into one major stop with a public bus shelter in front of Copper Croft Apartments. Work is expected to be underway in summer 2020 and be completed in fall 2021. During construction, drivers can expect shoulder closures and nighttime lane closures on Route 419.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board included funding for this project in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s budget in 2016 as result of Roanoke County submitting a SMART SCALE application.
