SALEM –The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is warning drivers to watch out for icy spots on roadways throughout western Virginia as low overnight temperatures have caused re-freezing of any moisture on roadways after yesterday’s winter weather event.  

Motorists may encounter icy patches, frozen slush and slick spots on previously treated roadways.  With temperatures at or below freezing, any road that appears wet may be icy this morning.

Secondary roads and neighborhood streets (those numbered 600 and above) remain ice covered in many areas, particularly in the higher elevations and mountainous locations.

Road conditions are expected to improve today as temperatures rise. 

VDOT crews responded to trees that fell last night due to icing conditions.   To report downed trees on state maintained roads, contact VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (7623) or go to http://www.virginiadot.org and click on the Report a Road Problem link.

Travelers are reminded that they can get real-time information on road conditions and traffic incidents on Virginia roads by using VDOT’s 511 free mobile app or the www.511Virginia.org website and phone system.
