TRAFFIC ALERT: NEW HARDY ROAD BRIDGE SCHEDULED TO OPEN TO TRAFFIC IN FRANKLIN COUNTY
SALEM – As work to replace the bridge on Route 634 (Hardy Road) over the Roanoke River at Smith Mountain Lake continues, drivers will soon experience traveling on the new bridge.
On Monday, July 29, 2019, a portion of Route 634 (Hardy Road) traffic will be switched onto the new bridge. For the next three days, July 29, 30 and 31, motorists traveling from Franklin County towards Roanoke will travel on the new bridge and traffic coming from Roanoke to Franklin County will continue to use the old bridge.
Then, on Thursday, August 1, the new bridge will open to all traffic and all drivers will be switched onto the new bridge, weather permitting.
Work to remove the old bridge will be performed as the next phase of the project. Boaters should continue to use caution if entering the lake from the Roanoke Boat Ramp. Boats will have to pass through a work zone in the middle of the lake by the bridge for access into the lake.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2019.
