TRAFFIC IMPACTS COMPLETE AT I-64 AND AIRPORT DRIVE IN HENRICO COUNTY
Project adds safety and efficiency near major airport access hub

SOUTH CHESTERFIELD — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed all work impacting traffic at the interchange of Interstate 64 and Airport Drive (Route 156) in Henrico County. “Drivers will no longer experience long-term traffic impacts due to construction,” said Robert Poutier, P.E., Richmond District Construction Engineer. “For drivers, the work will appear complete, however there are items left to address. These should not cause major impacts and will be completed by October 2022.”

As part of the project, the two bridges on I-64 east and west over Airport Drive were fully replaced, which increased the vertical height clearance on Airport Drive. Additionally, the existing full cloverleaf interchange was converted to a partial cloverleaf interchange to reduce weaving traffic onto Airport Drive from I-64 and increase efficiency. New, signalized median crossovers on Airport Drive were constructed to facilitate this interchange reconfiguration.

“The new, long-lasting structures will give travelers headed to and from the Richmond International Airport a much more efficient trip, and will better accommodate taller vehicles on Airport Drive beneath I-64,” Poutier added.

The $35 million project began February 2019, and is substantially complete and under budget. The purpose of the project was to improve safety and efficiency near the Richmond International Airport.
