SOUTH CHESTERFIELD – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District crews have been engaged since this morning addressing high water and debris impacting travel as more heavy rain continues today in the central region.

Crews are currently working to remove debris from storm drains to promote water flow, clear fallen trees and limbs from roadways, and close roads where high water is present. Work will continue until high water recedes and roads can be safely reopened to traffic.

Drivers are urged not to drive through any amount of standing water on the road. Washouts, active power lines, sharp debris and other hazards could be present beneath the water’s surface, and it only takes six inches of water to move a vehicle.

Motorists should be aware of the following as rain continues:

• Never attempt to move or drive around road closure barriers, cones, or signs. Closures are in place for motorist safety, and crews will reopen the road as soon as it’s safe to do so.
• Limit travel if possible until flooding subsides.
• If you must travel, use headlights and windshield wipers to maximize visibility. Reduce your speed, as wet pavement can impact traction.
• If you see high water on a road, always “turn around, don’t drown” and call VDOT at (800) 367-7623 to report the blockage.
