Lane Closure Necessary for 495 NEXT Construction

FAIRFAX, VA –During overnight hours tonight, Wednesday, June 1, triple-lane closures will be needed on north- and southbound I-495 between the Dulles Access Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway. These lane closures are necessary to permanently close the northbound Green Arrow/Red X left-shoulder lane (previously open during morning and afternoon peak travel periods), temporarily close the southbound left shoulder, and realign the travel lanes on I-495 to the outside.

These changes are being implemented to make space in the center of the Beltway for construction of new bridges that will span the wider, future Beltway at Old Dominion Drive, Georgetown Pike and Live Oak Drive. The work is part of the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project to extend the existing 495 Express Lanes from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway near the American Legion Bridge.

Other immediate lane closures associated with this work include double lane closures during the overnights of Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3 on both northand southbound I-495. In the event of inclement weather, double-lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 will occur during the overnight of Saturday, June 4. Travelers approaching the construction area should anticipate delays and plan accordingly.

Additionally, VDOT and its 495 NEXT project partner, Transurban, along with the design-build contractor, Lane Construction, will host two project update meetings for the public next week. The meetings, one in-person and one virtual, will enable the project team to update the public about project design and construction updates, and answer questions. Meeting details are:
