UPDATE (9/12/2022): The closures below will continue tonight, Monday, September 12, using Sunday night's hours.

FAIRFAX – Overnight lane closures are planned on I-66 West approaching Gallows Road this Friday, September 9, through Sunday, September 11, for installation of bridge beams for the new Gallows Road South Bridge over I-66. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. 

Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction during the overnight hours as part of this work. Two-way traffic will run on Gallows Road North.  

Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Friday, September 9, through Sunday, September 11
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Rod

• Two lanes will be closed Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. on weekend mornings, and by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West

• One lane on the ramp will be closed Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. on weekend mornings, and by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Overhead message boards will direct drivers to alternate routes.
• The ramp will reopen by 7 a.m. on weekend mornings, and by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Gallows Road over I-66

• Gallows Road over I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The southbound side of Gallows Road will be closed and two-way traffic will run on the northbound side during this period.
• All lanes will reopen by 7 a.m. on weekend mornings, and by 6 a.m. Monday morning.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

As work to install bridge beams advances, additional multiple-night lane closures and traffic stoppages will be scheduled on I-66 West and Gallows Road over I-66 in the coming weeks. Message boards on Gallows Road and I-66 will provide advance notice of lane closures and traffic stoppages.  

Gallows Road over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.
