FAIRFAX – Walney Road East and West between Route 28 and Cabells Mill Drive will be closed during the overnight hours Monday, February 28, through Wednesday, March 2, for overhead sign installation. Traffic will be detoured using Westfields Boulevard. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Details include:

Monday, February 28, through Wednesday, March 2
Walney Road East and West between Route 28 and Cabells Mill Drive

• Walney Road will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night with no thru-traffic to Braddock Road or access to the ramps to Route 28 South and I-66.
• Westbound Walney Road traffic traveling to Braddock Road, Route 28 South, or I-66 West will be detoured via westbound Westfields Boulevard.
• Braddock Road drivers wishing to travel eastbound to Walney Road will be directed to Westfields Boulevard, then travel east to reach Walney Road.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur. 

The new Route 28 and I-66 Interchange will improve traffic flow on I-66 and Route 28, and provide access to and from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes, which span from I-495 to Route 29 in Gainesville, are expected to open in December 2022.
