Northern Virginia: Stay Alert to Slick Travel Conditions
Strong winds may cause debris on roads; Watch for icy spots and refreeze overnight
FAIRFAX - Northern Virginia crews continue to treat icy spots after Sunday's storm that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain,to the region.
Residents are asked to be aware of the potential for ice and nightly refreeze as temperatures remain low.
What's Happening Now
- A Wind Advisory for the region has been issued from the National Weather Service until 10 p.m. Strong wind gusts may cause down trees, branches, and power lines. Tree removal crews will be deployed to remove trees from the roadway.
- Crews continue to treat roads for icy and slick spots. Watch for black ice and treat anything that looks wet as if it could be ice.
- Continue to avoid or delay trips if possible to give trucks room to work and treat icy areas. Temperatures will remain around freezing most of the day, causing potential icy conditions especially on ramps, bridges, overpasses and other elevated surfaces.
- If you encounter a traffic signal with no power, treat it as an all-way stop. Remember to stop for flashing red signals and proceed with caution through flashing yellow signals.
Reminders for Residents and Drivers:
- To report downed trees or other debris in the road, residents can contact the Customer Service Center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623) or my.vdot.virginia.gov.
