Duke Street Westbound Daytime Lane Closures at I-395 in Alexandria Feb. 2
Westbound traffic shift as part of Duke Street over I-395 bridge project

ALEXANDRIA – Lane closures will occur, weather permitting, along westbound Duke Street (Route 236) between South Walker Street and Oasis Drive Wednesday, Feb. 2 to implement a traffic shift, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the right lane of westbound Duke Street will be closed followed by the left lane to install temporary striping for the traffic shift. Around 3 p.m., westbound traffic along the bridge over I-395 will be shifted to the right until this fall.

The work is part of the project to rehabilitate the Duke Street bridge over I-395. The improvements will extend the overall life of the bridge and improve safety for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, and include replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, upgrading the westbound sidewalk to a shared-use path, and widening the eastbound sidewalk. The project is scheduled for completion in winter 2023/24.

Visit the VDOT project page for more details.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
