Route 29 (Lee Highway) in Centreville Reduced to Two Lanes Under I-66 Next Weekend, July 23-26, for I-66 Bridge Beam Installation as Part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project
Flaggers will direct single lane traffic during overnight hours
FAIRFAX – Installation of bridge beams for the new I-66 bridges over Route 29 in Centreville will require reducing Route 29 (Lee Highway) under I-66 to a single travel lane in each direction starting at 9 p.m. Friday, July 23, continuing through 4 a.m. Monday, July 26. Two-way traffic will run on the northbound side of Route 29 starting around 9 p.m. Friday evening, July 23, through Saturday evening, July 24. The traffic pattern will switch around 6 p.m. Saturday, with two-way traffic on the southbound side of Route 29 for the remainder of the weekend. Closures are needed for crews to safely lift I-66 bridge beams into place over Route 29. Work will be on-going throughout the weekend during both daytime and nighttime hours.
During overnight hours Friday through Sunday, July 23-25, flaggers will alternate a single lane of traffic in each direction. No left turns will be allowed on the ramps to and from I-66 during this time. Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and consider using alternate routes.
Details include:
From 9 p.m. on Friday, July 23, through 4 a.m. on Monday, July 26:
Route 29 North and South at I-66
- Beginning around 9 p.m. Friday, July 23, through 4 a.m. Monday, July 26, Route 29 will be reduced to a single travel lane in each direction.
- Two-way traffic will run in the northbound lanes of Route 29 under I-66 from 9 p.m. Friday, July 23, through around 6 p.m. Saturday, July 24.
- Two-way traffic will run in the southbound lanes of Route 29 under I-66 from around 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, through 4 a.m. Monday, July 26.
- During the overnight hours Friday, July 23, and Saturday, July 24, from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. flaggers will alternate a single lane of traffic in each direction in a one-lane section of Route 29. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes.
- All lanes reopen by 4 a.m. Monday, July 26.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 29
- No left turn to Route 29 North.
- Drivers will be directed to turn right onto Route 29 South, stay to the left, and make a U-turn at O’Day Drive onto Route 29 North.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 29
- No left turn to Route 29 South.
- Drivers will be directed to turn right on Route 29 North, stay to the left and continue to the intersection of Trinity Parkway/Machen Road. At the traffic signal, drivers will use the left-most left-turn lane to make a U-turn onto Route 29 South.
Ramp from Route 29 North to I-66 East
- The ramp from Route 29 North to I-66 East will be closed.
- Drivers will be directed to continue farther north to the intersection of Trinity Parkway/Machen Road. At the traffic signal, drivers will use the left-most left-turn lane to make a U-turn onto Route 29 South, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
- As an alternate route, drivers can continue farther north to Route 28 North, stay to the right, and follow signs to I-66 East.
Ramp from Route 29 South to I-66 West
- The ramp from Route 29 South to I-66 West will be closed beginning around 9 p.m. Friday, July 23, through 6 p.m. Saturday, July 24.
- Drivers will be directed to continue farther south, stay to the left and make a U-turn at O’Day Drive onto Route 29 North, and then follow signs to I-66 West.
Message boards on I-66 and Route 29 are providing advance notice of lane closures and traffic stoppages.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The I-66 bridges over Route 29 are being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridges are being lengthened, widened, and raised to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for any future mass transit along I-66 and future widening of Route 29. This work is being done in phases in order to maintain traffic on I-66 throughout construction.

During overnight hours Saturday, July 24, all lanes of Route 29 North in Centreville will be closed. Flaggers will alternate northbound and southbound traffic on the southbound side in a single lane under I-66 for bridge beam installation. Periodic stoppages will occur.
During daytime hours Sunday, July 25, all lanes of Route 29 North in Centreville will be closed with two-way traffic running in the southbound lanes of Route 29 under I-66.
