Ramp Openings, Traffic Pattern Changes Planned at Nutley Street/I-66 Interchange This Weekend, October 1-4
Nutley Street lanes will shift over I-66; New loop ramps will open from Nutley Street South to I-66 East and Nutley Street North to I-66 West
FAIRFAX – Travel lanes on Nutley Street will shift and two new loop ramps will open at the Nutley Street/I-66 Interchange as part of work planned for this weekend, October 1-4, for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Scheduled changes include opening permanent loop ramps from Nutley Street South to I-66 East and from Nutley Street North to I-66 West.
The northbound lanes of Nutley Street will be shifted to the west, with two travel lanes in each direction running on the west side of the bridge over I-66. Pedestrians will also be detoured to the west side of the bridge. This temporary traffic pattern will allow construction of the new Nutley Street Interchange to advance while keeping Nutley Street open to vehicles and pedestrians. This shift will remain in place through approximately January 2022.
Drivers should expect the following new traffic patterns, weather permitting:
Ramp from Nutley Street South to I-66 East
- During the overnight hours of Friday, October 1, a new, permanent loop ramp from Nutley Street South to I-66 East will open on the right side of the roadway near the previous loop ramp's location.
- Drivers on Nutley Street South will no longer be able to make a left turn at the temporary traffic signal to reach I-66 East.
Nutley Street North and South over I-66
- During the overnight hours of Friday, October 1, the northbound travel lanes of Nutley Street will shift to the west side of the bridge over I-66. Northbound and southbound traffic will each have two travel lanes.
- Pedestrian access over I-66 will be maintained on the west side of Nutley Street between Virginia Center Boulevard/Marshall Road and Saintsbury Drive/Swanee Lane.
Ramp from Nutley Street North to I-66 West
- During the early morning hours of Monday, October 4, the new, permanent loop ramp from northbound Nutley Street to I-66 West will open on the right side of the roadway near the previous loop ramp's location.
- Drivers on Nutley Street North will no longer be able to make a left turn at the temporary traffic signal to reach I-66 West.
Ramp closure and detour details to implement these changes include:
Friday night, October 1, through Monday morning, October 4
Ramp from Nutley Street North to I-66 West
- The current left-turn ramp will be permanently closed around 8 p.m. Friday, October 1, for paving work.
- Traffic will be directed farther north, stay to the left at the intersection with Virginia Center Boulevard and make a U-turn from the left-most turn lane, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West.
- The new, permanent loop ramp from Nutley Street North to I-66 West on the right side of the roadway (see diagram above) will open by 5 a.m. Monday, October 4.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
When construction is complete, the rebuilt interchange will feature two roundabouts, which will provide safer, more efficient travel for vehicles entering and exiting I-66, and improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians traveling on Nutley Street.
