FAIRFAX – Demolition of the remainder of the old Route 50 bridges over I-66 continues this week with overnight lane closures and traffic stoppages on I-66, Monday, August 16, through Thursday, August 19. The Route 50 Interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes. 

Demolition Progress to Date:

• Demolition of the old Route 50 West bridge over I-66 was completed on July 16.
• Demolition of the old Route 50 East bridge over I-66 was completed on August 13.

What’s Ahead the Week of August 16:

• Crews will demolish the old bridge piers using jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams.
• Following completion of the demolition along I-66, the old Route 50 West bridge over the ramp from Route 50 East to I-66 East will be demolished. Work will consist of removal of the concrete bridge deck using jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams, followed by removal of steel bridge beams.
• Demolition will occur during the overnight hours when multiple I-66 travel lanes can be closed.

What Drivers Should Expect:

I-66 West at Route 50
Monday, August 16, through Wednesday, August 18

• Two lanes on westbound I-66 approaching Route 50 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages during the overnight hours.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

I-66 East at Route 50
Monday, August 16, through Thursday, August 19

• Two lanes on eastbound I-66 approaching Route 50 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• Drivers should expect periodic brief stoppages during the overnight hours.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

The I-66/Route 50 Interchange is being rebuilt to add Express Lanes access to and from the east and to construct a new shared-use path as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
