Overnight Lane Closures on I-66 Near Route 50 Next Week, March 9-12 for Waples Mill Road Bridge Demolition

FAIRFAX – Demolition of the remaining portion of the old Waples Mill Road Bridge over I-66, located east of the Route 50 interchange, will continue during overnight hours Tuesday, March 9, through Friday, March 12. Overnight lane closures will be required in this area on I-66 East and West to safely conduct the work over the roadway. The Waples Mill Road Bridge is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.  

What Drivers Should Expect:

  • Tuesday, March 9, through Thursday, March 11, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., I-66 East will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Waples Mill Road.
  • Friday, March 12, from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. I-66 East and West will be reduced to one travel lane approaching Waples Mill Road.
  • Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes on I-66 between midnight and 4 a.m. each night.
  • All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. (9 a.m. Saturday morning).
  • Work schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.

About Waples Mill Bridge Demolition:

  • Crews will demolish the old bridge span over I-66 East and West using jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams followed by removal of the steel bridge beams.
  • Demolition of the remaining old Waples Mill Road Bridge over I-66 is anticipated to take approximately eight to ten nights of work to complete, depending on weather and other factors such as construction progress.

The Waples Mill Road Bridge over I-66 is being rebuilt to provide room for the future express lanes as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Work is being done in phases in order to maintain traffic on Waples Mill Road throughout demolition and reconstruction. The first phase of the new bridge opened to traffic in fall 2020.
