FAIRFAX – Lane closures, ramp closures, and traffic stoppages on I-66 West and I-495 South will occur during the overnight hours this weekend and next week as bridge beam installation continues at the I-66/I-495 Interchange as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-495 South and I-66 West should expect delays as both interstates will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching the I-66/I-495 Interchange nightly. 

During the overnight hours of Saturday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 4, there will be a short detour where all southbound I-495 traffic will be crossed over in to the 495 Express Lanes South. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour. Full traffic stoppages of up to 20 minutes will also occur several times these nights.

The ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South will also be closed with a detour posted Friday, April 30; Saturday, May 1; Monday, May 3; and Tuesday, May 4. 

Drivers should consider using alternate routes during these times.

Friday, April 30, and Monday, May 3
I-495 South from Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to I-66

• I-495 South approaching I-66 will reduced to one travel lane nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South

• The ramp will be closed from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday.
• Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Nutley Street, stay to the left on the ramp and turn left at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street South, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 East, and follow signs to I-495 South.
• The ramp from I-66 West to the 495 Express Lanes South will remain open. 

Saturday, May 1, and Tuesday, May 4
I-495 South from Route 7 to I-66

• I-495 South approaching I-66 will be reduced to one travel lane nightly from 10:30 p.m. (10 p.m. on Tuesday) to 5 a.m.
• Around 11:30 p.m. (11 p.m. Tuesday night), all southbound I-495 traffic will be crossed over into the 495 Express Lanes South under I-66 for a short distance before returning to the general purpose lanes. Drivers will not be charged for using the short detour in the Express Lanes.    
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes each night.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

495 Express Lanes South approaching I-66

• The southbound Express Lanes will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.

Ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South

• The ramp will be closed from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturday and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday.
• Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Nutley Street, stay to the left on the ramp and turn left at the traffic signal on to Nutley Street South, then stay to the left and turn left at the traffic signal to I-66 East, and follow signs to I-495 South.
• The ramp from I-66 West to the 495 Express Lanes South will remain open.

• There will be brief stoppages of traffic on the ramp nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

• There will be brief stoppages of traffic on the ramp nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

I-66 West at I-495

• Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Wednesday, May 5
I-495 South from Route 7 to I-66

• I-495 South approaching I-66 will reduced to one travel lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Thursday, May 6, and Friday, May 7
I-495 South at I-66

• Two lanes will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

495 Express Lanes South at I-66

• One lane will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

• The ramp will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.

Ramp from I-66 East to 495 Express Lanes South

• The ramp will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Overhead variable message boards in the Express Lanes will direct traffic to an alternate route.

I-66 West at I-495

• Westbound I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

The I-66/I-495 Interchange is being modified with several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Improvements at the interchange include adding access to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as building new connections between express and general purpose lanes.
