Overnight Full Closures of I-66 in Centreville Continue Through October 22 for Route 28 South Bridge Demolition
Detours will be posted for closures of I-66 and associated ramps
FAIRFAX – Full closures of I-66 in the Centreville area will continue nightly through October 22 as crews remove beams as part of demolition of the old Route 28 South bridge over I-66. The Route 28 Interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
On Tuesday night (October 19), I-66 West approaching Route 28 will close, with through-traffic detoured to Route 28 North and Westfields Boulevard. The I-66 West ramp to Route 28 South will also be closed. The I-66 West ramp to Braddock Road/Walney Road will remain open.
On Wednesday through Friday nights (October 20-22), all lanes of I-66 East approaching Route 29 in Centreville will close nightly. Traffic will be detoured using Route 29 North and Route 28 North. Multiple I-66 ramps to/from Route 29 will also be closed during these nights.
Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes.
Construction Progress Last Weekend (October 15-17):
- Traffic shifted to the new Route 28 South bridge on Friday, October 15.
- Crews completed demolition of the concrete bridge deck over I-66 East and West during the weekend of October 15-16, and began removing the old bridge beams over I-66 West Sunday, October 17.
What’s Ahead This Week (Through October 22):
- The steel bridge beams over I-66 will be removed during the overnight hours Tuesday, October 19, through Friday, October 22.
What Drivers Should Expect This Week:
Tuesday, October 19
I-66 West at Route 28
- I-66 West will be closed at Route 28 from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
- All traffic will be directed to exit the interstate to Route 28 North, continue north to the westbound Westfields Boulevard exit, stay to the right to Route 28 South, then follow signs to I-66 West.
- The ramp to Braddock Road/Walney Road will remain open.
- All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South
- The ramp will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
- Traffic will be directed to exit to Route 28 North, continue north to the westbound Westfields Boulevard exit, then stay to the right to Route 28 South.
Wednesday, October 20, through Friday, October 22
I-66 East at Route 29 Centreville
- I-66 East will be closed at Route 29 in Centreville from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- All traffic will be directed to exit to Route 29, stay to the right to Route 29 North, continue north to the ramp to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
- All lanes will reopen by 4 a.m.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 29 South
- The spur ramp to southbound Route 29 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- Traffic will be directed to stay to the right to Route 29 North, then stay to the left and make a U-turn from the left-most left turn lane at the Trinity Parkway/Centrewood Drive traffic signal onto Route 29 South.
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- Traffic will be directed to exit the interstate (prior to the Route 28 North exit) to Route 29 North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North.
Ramp from Route 29 North and South to I-66 East
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
- Southbound Route 29 traffic will be detoured farther south, stay to the left and make a U-turn at O’Day Drive onto Route 29 North, stay to the right to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
- Northbound Route 29 traffic will be directed farther north to Route 28 North, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 East.
All work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The Route 28 Interchange is being reconstructed to improve traffic flow on I-66 and Route 28, and provide access to and from the future I-66 Express Lanes. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes, which span from I-495 to Route 29 in Gainesville, are expected to open in December 2022.
