Overnight Demolition on Gallows Road Bridge Over I-66 Continues Next Week, Dec. 5-11
Gallows Road Bridge being replaced as part of Transform 66 Project
FAIRFAX – Overnight demolition of the old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 will continue Sunday night, December 5, through Saturday night, December 11, with nightly multi-lane closures on westbound I-66. Crews will be breaking up the old concrete bridge deck over I-66 West and removing old bridge beams over I-66 West and the Metrorail Orange Line and Dunn Loring Metrorail Station. The Gallows Road Bridge is being replaced as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
What’s Ahead for the Week of December 5:
- On Sunday night, December 5, crews will resume demolition of the portion of the old concrete bridge deck over I-66 West using jackhammers, saw cutters and hoe rams.
- Following demolition of the old concrete deck over I-66 West, crews will remove the old bridge beams over I-66 West and the Metrorail facilities during overnight hours.
- Once the old bridge beams over I-66 West and the Metrorail facilities are removed, crews will begin demolition of the northernmost bridge span during overnight hours.
Portions of the bridge directly over I-66 are being demolished during overnight hours (typically between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.), when multiple lanes can be closed on I-66 to safely accommodate this work. Remaining portions of the northernmost bridge span will be demolished during daytime hours to the extent feasible. For updates on bridge demolition progress, visit transform66.org/gallowsroad.
