New Jermantown Road Bridge Over I-66 to Open on or about May 13; Demolition of Current Bridge Planned to Begin on or about May 14
FAIRFAX – The new Jermantown Road Bridge over I-66 is planned to open next week, with demolition of the old bridge to begin the following night. Jermantown Road traffic is scheduled to be shifted to the new crossing over I-66 on or about Thursday, May 13, with demolition to begin on Friday night, May 14. The Jermantown Road Bridge is located between Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and Route 50, and is being replaced as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Demolition of the old bridge will occur primarily during overnight hours when multiple lanes of I-66 can be closed to safely accommodate this work. When possible, demolition activities will occur during daytime hours to minimize impacts to nearby communities. Demolition of the bridge span is expected to require seven nights of work. Progress updates and additional information about demolition work and traffic closures will be provided on the project website.
All work is weather dependent and schedules may shift if inclement conditions occur.
The Jermantown Road Bridge over I-66 is being rebuilt to accommodate the widening of I-66. The new bridge will include a bike lane and sidewalk in each direction with nearby connection to the new shared-use path being built along I-66.
Traffic will be shifted to the new Jermantown Road Bridge over I-66 (above left) on/about May 13. Following the traffic shift, demolition of the current Jermantown Road Bridge (above right) is planned to begin on/about May 14.
