FAIRFAX – Demolition of the old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 continues, with demolition of the northern bridge abutment planned for this weekend during the daytime hours Saturday and Sunday, December 11-12. Bridge beams over I-66 West and the Metrorail Orange Line and Dunn Loring Metrorail Station will be removed during overnight hours next week, Monday through Friday, December 13-17. The Gallows Road Bridge is being replaced as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and should consider using alternate routes.

What’s ahead for this Weekend and Next Week: 

• During the daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday, December 11-12, crews will demolish the old bridge abutment on the north side of I-66. Work will require use of jack hammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams. No lane closures will be required for this work. (Note that this work may be rescheduled for a later date based on weather or other construction scheduling factors.)
• During the overnight hours Monday through Friday, December 13-17, crews will remove the old bridge beams over I-66 West and over the WMATA facilities.
• The old center bridge pier along I-66 West and adjacent to the WMATA facilities will be demolished during the overnight hours, following the removal of the old bridge beams, on or about Saturday night, December 18.
• All work is weather dependent, and schedules may shift if inclement conditions occur.

What Drivers Should Expect:

Monday, December 13, through Saturday, December 18
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road

• Three lanes will be closed nightly Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, and Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes nightly Sunday through Thursday nights between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., and Friday between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. weekdays, and by 7 a.m. weekends.

Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West

• The ramp will be reduced to one travel lane nightly Monday through Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. weekdays, and by 7 a.m. weekends.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed nightly Monday through Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes. 
• The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m. weekdays, and by 7 a.m. weekends.

Demolition Progress to Date:

• Crews completed demolition the old concrete bridge deck over the I-66 West travel lanes on December 8.
• Crews completed demolition the concrete bridge deck and removed bridge beams on the northernmost span of the old bridge the night of December 9.

The Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.
