FAIRFAX – All lanes of I-66 West approaching Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) will close nightly, Monday through Thursday, October 18-21, for continued bridge beam installation at the I-66/I-495 Interchange. Traffic will be detoured using Route 7 and I-495. Additionally, multiple lanes will be closed on the northbound I-495 general purpose lanes near I-66, as well as a full closure of the 495 Express Lanes, and associated ramps at the I-66 and I-495 interchange so that this work may be implemented. Crews are installing beams for a new flyover ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling in this area should expect delays and consider using alternate routes.

Details include:

Monday, October 18, through Thursday, October 21
I-66 West at I-495

• Starting at 9 p.m. two lanes will be closed each night.
• Between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly, all I-66 West travel lanes will be closed at Route 7.
• All I-66 West traffic will be directed to exit the interstate to Route 7 West (toward Tysons), travel about one mile to I-495 South, and then follow signs to I-66 West. 
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night.
• Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 West, stay to the right to I-495 South, and then exit to I-66 West.
• The ramp will reopen by 4 a.m.

I-495 North from Route 29 (Lee Highway) to I-66

• Starting at 9 p.m., two lanes approaching I-66 will be closed nightly.
• Between 10:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night, northbound I-495 will be reduced to a single travel lane.
• Drivers should expect periodic short stoppages during the overnight hours.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal to I-66

• The 495 Express Lanes North will be closed from Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the Express Lanes) to I-66 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.

Ramp from I-66 East to the 495 Express Lanes North and South

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.

Ramp from the 495 Express Lanes South to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
• Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

The I-66/I-495 Interchange is being modified with several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Improvements at the interchange include adding access to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as building new connections between express and general purpose lanes.
