Demolition of Old I-66 Bridges over Stringfellow Road to Continue During Daytime Hours This Weekend, November 20-21, and During Overnight Hours November 22-23
Stringfellow Road reduced to two lanes, I-66 ramps closed throughout the weekend; Stringfellow Road under I-66 closed during overnight hours Monday and Tuesday nights
FAIRFAX – Demolition of the old I-66 East bridge over Stringfellow Road resumes this weekend, with bridge deck demolition planned during daytime and evening hours Saturday and Sunday, November 20-21. Crews will then remove the old steel bridge beams during the overnight hours November 22-23. The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Stringfellow Road under I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane running in the northbound lanes beginning around 4 a.m. Saturday to set up for demolition beginning around 8 a.m. Two-way traffic is planned to shift to the southbound lanes on Sunday and return to normal operations by 4:30 a.m., Monday, November 22.
On the nights of Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, November 23, Stringfellow Road North and South approaching I-66 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for overhead bridge beam removal. The Stringfellow Road ramps to and from I-66 will also be closed during these periods.
Drivers should expect delays if traveling in this area and consider using alternate routes.
What Neighbors Should Expect:
- The remainder of the old I-66 East bridge deck over Stringfellow Road will be demolished during the daytime and evening hours of Saturday, November 20, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, November 21, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Demolition of the old bridge involves breaking up the concrete bridge deck using jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams, followed by removal of the steel bridge beams.
- The old bridge beams will be removed with cranes during the overnight hours of Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, November 23, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
- After demolition of the bridge span is complete, the old bridge abutments will be demolished.
- Information about traffic impacts and demolition progress will be posted on transform66.org/stringfellow.
What Drivers Should Expect:
Saturday, November 20, and Sunday, November 21
Stringfellow Road North and South between Fair Lakes Boulevard and Westbrook Drive/Village Square Drive
- Beginning around 4 a.m. Saturday, Stringfellow Road will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction using the northbound lanes for two-way travel.
- Drivers should expect periodic five-minute stoppages during the daytime and evening hours Saturday.
- Two-way traffic will shift to the southbound travel lanes on Sunday.
- All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Monday.

- The ramps will be closed beginning around 4 a.m. Saturday.
- The ramps will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Monday.
Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, November 23
Stringfellow Road North and South between Fair Lakes Boulevard and Westbrook Drive/Village Square Drive
- Stringfellow Road North and South will be closed approaching I-66 from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. nightly.
- On the north side of I-66, thru-traffic will be directed to Fair Lakes Boulevard, turn right onto Fair Lakes Parkway, travel about one mile and turn right onto the ramp to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South, follow signs to Route 29 (Lee Highway) South, travel about two miles to reach the intersection with Stringfellow Road. Vehicles can then turn left to southbound Stringfellow Road or turn right to travel toward I-66.
- On the south side of I-66, thru-traffic will be directed to Route 29 North, travel north for two miles, then follow signs to Route 286 North. Drivers will then exit at Fair Lakes Parkway/Monument Drive, stay to the left to turn left at the traffic signal onto Fair Lakes Parkway, turn left onto Fair Lakes Boulevard, and then turn right onto Stringfellow Road to head north.
- All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. each day.

- The ramps will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. nightly.
- The ramps will reopen by 4:30 a.m. each day.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The I-66 bridges over Stringfellow Road are being widened to accommodate the new I-66 Express Lanes and provide room for any future mass transit along I-66.
