VDOT News - Northern Virginia

Fairfax--VDOT Northern Virginia crews will continue to monitor for ice and treat roads this morning until temperatures rise. Drivers are asked to delay trips until later in the day if possible. Use extreme caution and be aware of the potential for refreeze, even on previously treated areas and especially on elevated surfaces.

• The National Weather Service's Winter Weather Advisory that includes the Northern Virginia District remains through 7 a.m. this morning.
• With temperatures still below freezing, any precipitation left on previously treated pavement may refreeze, especially on lower-volume routes and bridges, ramps and overpasses.
• Crews continue to patrol and monitor for ice, and apply treatment such as sand and salt on trouble spots to help improve traction.
• Tree crews continue to respond to limbs broken or hanging due to heavy ice, and to support utility companies with entangled or downed power lines.

Reminders for Drivers:

• If possible, avoid travel until the sun rises and temperatures improve.
• If you must drive, allow extra time. Clear your vehicle completely of ice. Take the trip slow, increase distance behind other vehicles, and brake gently. Use particular caution on elevated surfaces such as bridges, ramps and overpasses.
• Check road conditions. Use www.511virginia.org or the free mobile app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia. Check conditions along your route, as well, as conditions may be more severe to areas just south of the district.
