Virtual Update on Route 50 Study Available in Arlington
Presentation and online survey available through May 29
ARLINGTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation is offering a virtual update and comment period on potential improvements being studied along Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) between Glebe Road (Route 120) and Fillmore Street.
In lieu of an in-person presentation that was targeted for this spring, VDOT invites residents and travelers to learn more and share feedback from home. A video presentation covers draft alternatives that have been developed since a first public information meeting was held in November 2019, and residents can take an online survey through May 29.
The presentation, survey, past meeting materials and more study details are all available at virginiadot.org/route50arlingtonstudy. Comments can also be sent to meetingcomments@vdot.virginia.gov or to Mr. Bobby Mangalath, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.
Some of the potential improvements in the draft include:
- Traffic signal enhancements, such as timing optimization at Irving and Fillmore streets, and green left-turn arrows at Irving
- New left-turn lanes at Irving and extended left-turn lanes at Fillmore
- Improvements to access management, including medians for properties and streets along the corridor.
This study is being completed through VDOT’s Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program that aims to identify cost-effective measures to improve safety and reduce congestion.
Please note that this study does not set construction dates for any of the alternatives. The purpose of this study is to develop proposed improvements that localities can pursue for funding, and to consider including in their comprehensive plans.
The final study is expected to be complete and posted online this summer.
