Poplar Tree Road Extension and Bridge Over Route 28 in Chantilly Scheduled to Open Sunday, Nov. 22
New bridge provides additional connections in Westfields area, improved bicycle and pedestrian access to E.C. Lawrence Park
FAIRFAX – The Poplar Tree Road extension and bridge over Route 28 are scheduled to open on or about Sunday morning, November 22, connecting Walney Road and Stringfellow Road on the east with Stonecroft Boulevard and Westfields Boulevard on the west side of Route 28. The new bridge includes a shared-use path that connects to the new E.C. Lawrence Park access road, providing improved access to the park for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The new bridge and E.C. Lawrence Park access road are among several recent Route 28 improvements that are part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, including:
- New Route 28 North bridge span opened November 4
- New ramps from Braddock Road to Route 28 South and I-66 West opened November 7
- Removal of the final traffic signals between Route 7 in Sterling and Route 29 in Centreville on November 9
- New ramp from Route 28 North to I-66 East opened November 20
Additional connections between Route 28 North, I-66 West, and the new Braddock Road/Walney Road overpass are scheduled to open in upcoming weeks.
The new Poplar Tree Road bridge includes two travel lanes in each direction and a 10-foot wide shared-use path on the north side. The bridge was also built to accommodate possible future expansion of Poplar Tree Road. The bridge was partially funded as part of a $500 million concession fee payment to the Commonwealth of Virginia by I-66 Express Mobility Partners, dedicated to funding transportation projects benefitting the region. The bridge was constructed by the I-66 Outside the Beltway Project design-build contractor FAM Construction, LLC.
Drivers should use caution on the new bridge and extension, while adjusting to the new travel patterns.
Exact opening date and time are dependent on weather and finishing construction work.
