New Vaden Drive Bridge Over I-66 in Vienna to Open This Week
Reconstructed bridge will include access to future Express Lanes and improve connectivity around Vienna-Fairfax/GMU Metrorail Station
FAIRFAX – The reconstructed Vaden Drive Bridge over I-66 is scheduled to open by Wednesday, November 25, reconnecting Saintsbury Drive with Country Creek Road/Virginia Center Boulevard near the Vienna-Fairfax/GMU Metrorail Station. The new, wider bridge will include a shared-use path opening in late 2020, and ramps to and from the west that will connect to the Express Lanes being built as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
The rebuilt Vaden Drive Bridge is one of several significant changes around the Vienna Metrorail Station that will improve access to the station for vehicles, commuter buses, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The reopening of the bridge ends the Nutley Street vehicle detour. Pedestrians will continue to be detoured to the Vienna Metrorail station pedestrian bridge until the shared-use path opens in December 2020.
Remaining construction activities on the bridge include:
- Completion of the shared-use path and sidewalk on the east side of the bridge in December 2020
- Redesigned entrances from Vaden Drive to the Metrorail parking garages opening in December 2020
- Sidewalk on the west side of the bridge opening in summer 2021
- Building ramps to and from the future Express Lanes on the west side of the bridge
Drivers should use caution as construction activities continue on and near the bridge, and as people adjust to new travel patterns.
Exact opening date and time is dependent on weather and construction progress.
