Multi-month Closure and Detour of W&OD Trail at Idylwood Park Starting on or about July 27
Closure necessary for construction related to Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project

UPDATE (7/23): The planned closure and detour of the W&OD Trail at Idylwood Park has been postponed for additional project coordination. Updates will be announced once a new date is selected.

FAIRFAX – The Washington & Old Dominion Trail (W&OD Trail) near Idylwood Park (between Virginia Lane and the trail bridge over I-495) will close for approximately five months, beginning on or about Monday, July 27, through early December 2020. The closure is necessary for construction of a retaining wall and widening of the ramp from I-66 West to I-495 South for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Cyclists and pedestrians will be detoured as follows:

  • Pedestrians will be detoured through Idylwood Park around the closed section of the W&OD Trail using footpaths and the parking lot. This detour will be open during park operating hours – from one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset.
  • Cyclists will be directed to Virginia Lane and Nottingham Drive to detour around the closed section of trail. This on-road detour uses the W&OD Trail access at the end of Nottingham Drive.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
