Ramp from Saintsbury Drive to I-66 East to Close Permanently Tonight
Other Transform 66 Project work near Vienna Metrorail Station includes temporary closure of Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 beginning October 2019
FAIRFAX – The previously announced ramp closure from Saintsbury Drive to I-66 East will occur tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 4, with drivers being directed to use the Nutley Street Interchange. The closure will occur after midnight and be in place before Thursday morning’s rush begins. This ramp closure is required for the future I-66 Outside the Beltway Project roadway configuration near the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail Station.
Additional traffic changes coming to the Vienna Metrorail Station area include the temporary closure of the Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 beginning in October 2019 and lasting for approximately 10 months. Additional details include:
Additional traffic changes coming to the Vienna Metrorail Station area include the temporary closure of the Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 beginning in October 2019 and lasting for approximately 10 months. Additional details include:
- Posted detours will route drivers to Nutley Street.
- Existing access to the Vienna Metrorail Station parking garages to the north and south of I-66 will remain open to traffic, as will the ramp from westbound I-66 to Country Creek Road.
- To facilitate commuter bus service from the Vienna Metrorail Station during this closure, the Saintsbury Drive ramp to I-66 East will reopen during weekday peak periods for buses only.
- Improvements will also be made to the intersection of Saintsbury Drive and Nutley Street to help accommodate anticipated additional traffic at that intersection during the temporary closure of Vaden Drive.
Vaden Drive bridge will be rebuilt to accommodate the new footprint of I-66 with added bus and car-only express lanes access ramps to and from the west.
Additional details on the permanent closure of the Saintsbury Drive ramp and the temporary closure of Vaden Drive over I-66 will be available at a Transform 66 Construction Update Meeting tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Providence Community Center. Information will also be available on the project website at: outside.transform66.org.
When complete, the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project will feature three general purpose and two Express Lanes in each direction from I-495/Capital Beltway to Route 29 in Gainesville. The I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
