TRAFFIC SWITCH PLANNED FOR ROUTE 40 OVER PIGG RIVER
Temporary structure to open
LYNCHBURG —Construction of the temporary bridge on Route 40 over Pigg River in Pittsylvania County is nearing completion and it is anticipated that traffic will be switched to the temporary structure by May 29, weather permitting.
The structure will carry two-way traffic and all legal loads. It is anticipated to be in place for several years until a permanent replacement can be funded, designed and constructed.
In October 2018, the weight on the existing bridge, built in 1933, was posted at 27 tons for single unit trucks and 36 tons, four tons lower than the legal limit, for semi-trailers due to deterioration. This posting took place to allow two-way traffic to continue to use the structure.
