LYNCHBURG –Construction of a temporary bridge over Pigg River has started and the speed limit reduced to 45 mph on Route 40 from approximately 1 mile east of Route 751, Grassland Drive to 1 mile west of Route 774, Darby Road in Pittsylvania County.

“Motorists need to be aware of the presence of construction vehicles entering and exiting Route 40 to and from the project site,” said Kenneth Martin, Halifax Residency administrator who has oversight of Pittsylvania County projects. “Signs will alert motorists to the new speed limit and the presence of equipment.”

When completed in summer 2020, the temporary bridge adjacent to the existing structure will carry two-way traffic and all legal loads. This structure will remain in use until a permanent replacement can be funded, designed and constructed.

In October 2018, the weight limit on Route 40 over Pigg River in Pittsylvania County was posted at 27 tons for single unit trucks and 36 tons, four tons lower than the legal limit, for semi-trailers due to deterioration found during an inspection. This was done to allow two-way traffic to continue to use the structure while providing opportunities for further analysis and planning. VDOT staff are monitoring conditions on the existing structure on a more frequent basis during this effort.

No timeframe for the replacement of the existing structure has been identified.
