Danville Expressway Detour to Change

LYNCHBURG – Motorists who use Route 29, the Danville Expressway, should prepare for a change in traffic pattern early next week. Weather permitting, this change could occur on Tuesday, January 22.

Crews have constructed crossovers which will allow northbound traffic to access and operate in one southbound lane while southbound traffic will use the other. Two ramps will remain closed during this configuration---the on-ramp from Goodyear Boulevard to Route 29 North and the exit ramp from Route 29 North to River Park Drive. Alternate access is available.

The northbound passing lane of the expressway was closed to traffic in early December when the failure of a large underground pipe at Barkers Branch created safety issues. In mid-December, additional concerns led to the detour of northbound traffic through the City of Danville.

During the construction of the crossovers, work has also been underway to address the failure of the 84” pipe. Weather permitting, the work should be complete in early spring.
