SUFFOLK– As winter weather continues to move through the Commonwealth today, the
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is urging
motorists to use caution while driving, and be alert for possible ice patches.
With the timing of inclement weather, travel impacts such as falling pavement
temperatures in some areas could affect motorists during their commutes this afternoon
and through tomorrow morning. If possible, motorists should plan their travel around
the inclement weather, helping to keep drivers safe and allowing VDOT crews to do
their jobs.

Pavement temperatures are not expected to drop throughout the evening, but cold
temperatures after precipitation can lead to icy, hazardous roadways, potentially
impacting rush hour travel today and tomorrow morning. VDOT will continue to
monitor road surfaces throughout the afternoon and night and crews will treat as
necessary.

If you must travel during adverse weather conditions:

• Allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
• Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind the vehicle ahead of you.
• Brake very lightly to keep your tires from slipping on pavement.
• Keep an emergency winter weather kit in your vehicle which includes food,water, first aid materials, tools and blankets in the event of a breakdown or stoppage.
• Visit www.511Virginia.org for the latest road conditions and closures before traveling. If possible, avoid travel until precipitation stops and road conditions improve.
