JAMES CITY COUNTY – Beginning today, Dec. 20, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is moving into the second phase of the Virginia Capital Trail (VCT) project which includes a full bridge deck replacement of the long wooden bridge located along the Jamestown leg of the VCT.

As part of the bridge deck replacement, crews will be installing new bridge planks with an epoxy coating that will provide additional friction for safety of pedestrians and cyclists and will extend the life of the bridge deck.

During the second phase, the start of the trail closure will remain near mile marker 2, along with a closure at the trail entrance from Deerfield Court. Additionally, the portion of the trail that crosses over the beaver pond and wetlands, and connects to the main loop of the Greensprings Interpretive Trail will be closed. This closure is anticipated to be in place through early spring 2022. All work is weather dependent and subject to change.

As a continued safety precaution, this portion of the trail will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of the repairs. Trail users should utilize alternate routes along the Virginia Capital Trail, including a signed detour on the Greensprings Interpretive Trail (GST). During this closure, bicycles will be temporarily permitted on the detour portion of the GST; however, cyclists should be aware that some portions of the detour route are gravel rather than paved.

The Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile bicycle and pedestrian shared-use trail that connects Virginia’s past and present state capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond along Scenic Route 5.
