CULVERT REPLACEMENT PROJECT BEGINNING ALONG ROUTE 671
Full road closure of Route 671 scheduled for July

FRANKLIN – Contractor crews for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a culvert replacement project as early as June 22 on Route 671 (General Thomas Highway), located between the intersections of Route 734 (Handsom Road) and Route 650 (Shady Brook Trail) in Franklin.

The three-pipe culvert currently in place will be replaced with a double-barreled box culvert and once complete, will also include paved shoulders and a guardrail system.

Starting as early as July, approximately 1.5 miles of Route 671 will be closed for the duration of the culvert replacement project with signed detours in place directing traffic to Route 58 (Southampton Parkway) and Route 35 (Plank Road). Motorists will be advised in advance of additional closures and detour details that may occur during the project. The estimated completion date is fall 2020, and all construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.

This culvert replacement project on Route 671 will be complete before a separate planned bridge replacement, the Route 671 (General Thomas Highway) Over Nottoway River Bridge Replacement Project, begins in fall 2020 on Route 671 over the Nottoway River.

Motorists are encouraged to visit www.511virginia.org, call 511, or download Virginia’s free 511 mobile app, for current traffic and travel information.  To learn about all VDOT Hampton Roads’ projects, visit: https://www.virginiadot.org/projects/hampton%20roads/default.asp.
