Project Background

Roundabouts reduce an intersection's conflict points that can lead to fatal and severe injury crashes. The circular design and one-way traffic pattern within the roundabout nearly eliminate the potential for right-angle and head-on crashes. Motorists navigate roundabouts at lower speeds, which gives drivers more time to react. And, free-flowing traffic conditions reduce driver wait times and vehicle idling.

At Banks Ford Parkway and Celebrate Virginia Parkway, the intersection would be retrofitted with a modular roundabout to modify the existing traffic pattern. Modular roundabouts are prefabricated units made from recycled material that are bolted into place over several weeks. New pavement markings and signs would direct traffic through the roundabout. Work would occur within the existing intersection.

During construction, the Banks Ford Parkway and Celebrate Virginia Parkway intersection would remain open. Some vehicle movements at the intersection may be temporarily restricted at times to allow crews to install modular roundabout materials and pavement markings in the road.

Construction is anticipated to start in spring 2024 and conclude in summer 2024.

The estimated project cost of $700,000 would be funded by Stafford County.
