FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Motorists should continue to avoid travel this morning in the eastern Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, with slick road conditions and snow covering a portion of travel lanes.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are making repeat passes to plow snow and apply treatment materials along primary roads as snow continues to fall, as well as on high-volume secondary roads that connect with vital emergency and public facilities.

Primary roads are in minor condition in the Northern Neck, including on Route 3, Route 200, Route 202, Route 203, and Route 354. Route 360 is in minor condition in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. Travelers will find visible pavement and isolated patches of snow.

Primary roads, such as Route 17, are in moderate condition along the eastern end of the Middle Peninsula in Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex counties, with greater snow coverage in the travel lanes. Road conditions are also moderate in the eastern end of King and Queen and King William counties, near West Point. Isolated areas of snow coverage are present on primary roads in Essex County.

Secondary roads, which are routes numbered 600 and above, are in moderate condition in the counties of Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland in the Northern Neck, and in Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex, and the eastern portion of King and Queen and King William counties, in the Middle Peninsula. Secondary roads are in minor condition in Essex County, with isolated patches of snow.

Motorists are urged to remain off the roads until they are passable. Travel is hazardous when ice or snow is present on the road.

Once road conditions improve on primary and critical routes, snowplows can make progress clearing lower-volume roads and subdivision streets in residential areas.

While a precise time estimate cannot be provided for a plow to arrive on a specific road, VDOT's emergency response will continue into the weekend, 24 hours a day, until all roads have been reached and are safe for travel.

Online Snowplow Tracker

VDOT’s online snow plow tracking map has been activated for this storm in areas where 2 inches of snow or more has accumulated.

VDOT and contractor trucks are equipped with automatic vehicle location technology, and can be monitored on the tracker during snow removal operations.

Ferry Service

Service has been suspended on the Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County and the Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County through Monday, Jan. 24. Ferry service will be evaluated on Monday morning based on weather conditions.
