UPDATE: LADYSMITH ROAD DETOUR EXTENDED FOR DRAINAGE REPAIR
Ladysmith Road in Caroline County will remain closed to through traffic between S. River Road and Scott’s Lane until late June 2022
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A project to repair a large drainage box culvert on Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) over May’s Run in Caroline County has been extended.
Ladysmith Road will remain closed to through traffic between Route 638 (S. River Road) and Route 764 (Scott’s Lane) through late June 2022.
The road closed to traffic on April 5, and was anticipated to reopen in May, but more time will be required for construction. After excavation work began on site, additional deterioration was discovered at the culvert, requiring further design and construction work to restore the site and drainage features.
Detour signs remain posted to guide motorists around the closed portion of Ladysmith Road. Message boards are posted on key connecting routes notifying drivers that Ladysmith Road is closed to through traffic. However, access to all driveways and residential entrances are being maintained during the project.
The recommended detour route is approximately 16 miles and can accommodate truck traffic:
- Route 1
- Route 601 (Golansville Road)
- Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard)

Drivers are encouraged to use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination.
VDOT and its contractor are repairing a large box culvert to ensure the stability of the road and to maintain the drainage system.
Approximately 3,400 vehicles a day travel Ladysmith Road, according to a 2019 VDOT traffic count.
