ROUTE 17 BRIDGE DEMOLITION WILL BEGIN NEXT WEEK IN SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY
Work requires full traffic stops on I-95 and can only occur during overnight hours
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – As traffic travels on a new Route 17 bridge over Interstate 95 in Spotsylvania County, crews will begin demolition of the old overpass next week.
The Route 17 bridge over I-95 is located between Germanna Point Drive/Hospital Boulevard and Route 1. The work zone on I-95 is at located at mile marker 125 near the exit 126 (Route 1) interchange in the Massaponax area.
Bridge demolition is estimated to take four weeks to complete. Nighttime operations will result in noise impacts to nearby residents.
The work will require intermittent full traffic stops on I-95 and can only occur during the overnight hours to limit the impact to I-95 travelers.
To maintain two travel lanes on Route 17 during construction, traffic is currently traveling in the future northbound lanes on the new bridge to cross I-95 to allow crews to build the southbound lanes.
Traffic will remain in this pattern until construction is complete in 2024.
Starting early Tuesday, Oct. 11, drivers can expect overnight lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound through late October during off-peak travel times. On several weekday evenings, double lane closures with overnight traffic stops are scheduled to occur throughout the month.
The full traffic stops will only occur between midnight and 3 a.m. on weekday evenings. Each stop may last up to 30 minutes at a time.
Traffic will be allowed to clear in between each 30-minute interval.
Project Background
Construction on the $23.5 million bridge replacement and widening project started in late December 2020.
Route 17 will be expanded to four travel lanes between Latitude Street and just east of the Hospital Boulevard and Germanna Point Drive intersection.
A shared-use path for pedestrians will be built along the southern side of Route 17 and sidewalk will be built along the northern side of Route 17. Pedestrian crossing equipment and crosswalks will be added at intersection crossing locations.
The new overpass, travel lanes, sidewalk and path will open in early 2024.
Around 28,000 vehicles a day travel on Route 17 in the project area.
