The portion of Balls Neck Road will remain closed for approximately three months while work is underway.
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Route 605 (Balls Neck Road) at the bridge over Mill Creek in Northumberland County for a bridge maintenance project next week.
Starting Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, Balls Neck Road will close to traffic between Route 669 (Waddeys Road) and Route 679 (Crosshills Road) for approximately three months while work is underway.
The bridge is one of multiple bridges scheduled to be repaired in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula to address bridge scour. Scour is the erosion of soil around a bridge’s foundation.
The posted detour will be to the following routes:
- Route 669 (Waddeys Road)
- Route 679 (Crosshills Road)
- Route 606 (Shiloh School Road)
- Route 200 (Jesse Dupont Memorial Highway)

The signed detour route is approximately 7 miles. Drivers are encouraged to use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination.
Message boards are posted to warn motorists about the upcoming road closure.
Weather permitting, Balls Neck Road is anticipated to reopen to traffic in early April 2023.
