FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Route 631 (Poor House Lane) in King and Queen County next week to replace a bridge over Market Swamp.

Starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, VDOT will close Poor House Lane between Route 14 (The Trail) and Route 630 (DeShazo Road).

Weather permitting, a detour will be in place for approximately 14 weeks while construction is underway.

Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately nine miles:

• Route 14 (The Trail)
• Route 620 (Powcan Road)

VDOT bridge crews will replace the existing timber deck bridge with a 46’ pre-stressed concrete slab span structure on new concrete abutments. The new bridge more than doubles the 60-year-old structure in length.

Built in 1961, the existing bridge has a posted vehicle weight limit of 15 tons. Once construction is complete, the posting will be removed.

Weather permitting, the new, longer and wider concrete bridge is expected to open to traffic in late spring 2022.

Around 187 vehicles a day travel Poor House Lane, according to a 2018 VDOT traffic count.
