VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Travelers should be advised that winter weather could create hazardous travel conditions in the Fredericksburg District on Thursday, Friday and into the weekend, as two back-to-back rounds of inclement weather are forecasted for the region.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) advises travelers to plan to avoid travel during inclement weather, and immediately after a storm ends, until road conditions improve. Real-time road conditions are available on 511Virginia.

VDOT crews in the Fredericksburg District plan to mobilize in emergency response after midnight into early Thursday morning, and will be in place for a wintry mix anticipated to bring light rain, sleet, and snow. Accumulation is expected to range from trace amounts to several inches. Between VDOT crewmembers and contractors, more than 600 men and women are ready to respond across the 14-county district.

Interstate 95 and primary routes in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula have been pretreated with a salt brine solution to reduce icing. However, even with pretreatment, roads may become slick once precipitation begins. Travel is hazardous whenever snow and ice are present on the road surface.

VDOT crews are expected to remain mobilized in emergency response, with additional resources to be deployed ahead of a winter storm forecast to affect the Fredericksburg District on Friday afternoon into Saturday, and bring accumulating snow across the district.

Crews will work 24 hours a day, in 12-hour shifts, through both winter weather events until all state-maintained roads are safe for travel.

Ferry Service

In the Northern Neck, service on the Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County and Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County has been suspended through Monday, Jan. 24. Ferry service will be evaluated on Monday morning based on weather conditions.
